1500GWh! Tesla's energy storage "big plan" appears

1500GWh! Tesla's energy storage

On May 6, Tesla released its 2021 Impact Report. According to the report, by 2030, Tesla aims to sell 20 million electric vehicles per year and deploy 1,500 GWh of energy storage projects per year to accelerate the global transition to sustainable energy.

The car sales target is unprecedented

Tesla's annual sales in 2021 will be 936,200 vehicles, and the target of 20 million vehicles in 2030 will be 21.36 times higher than last year.

In the first quarter of this year, Tesla produced 305,400 vehicles, an increase of 69% year-on-year; delivered 310,100 vehicles, an increase of 68% year-on-year. Taking the target of 20 million vehicles as the horizontal axis, so far, Tesla has achieved 5% of this target

I have to say that Tesla really dares to think. So far, no car manufacturer has achieved an annual sales volume of 20 million vehicles. Even if it exceeds 10 million vehicles, there are very few manufacturers. Only Volkswagen and Toyota have sales. In a few years There were more than 10 million vehicles.

Of course, that's not to say Tesla's goals are difficult to achieve. Starting from the data, from 2017 to 2021, Tesla's global deliveries were 103,200, 245,500, 367,600, 499,600, and 936,200, respectively, with a compound annual growth rate of 73.6%. If it grows at this rate, the possibility of realization is still very large.

Considering the current global production situation of Tesla, it is necessary to build more super factories, increase the types of models, and at the same time ensure production capacity and meet the needs of consumers, in order to get closer to the goal.

The other side of EV production capacity is power battery demand. When Tesla is rushing towards the goal, the demand for power batteries will naturally rise. You might as well take this opportunity to think about what the proportion of Tesla's self-produced batteries will be in the future, and whether new suppliers will be added?

Energy storage target "flying"

Tesla will deploy a total of 4 GWh of energy storage projects in 2021, and the target of 1,500 GWh in 2030 is a 375-fold increase in comparison.

At present, Tesla mainly has three energy storage products: Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack. Among them, Powerwall is a household energy storage battery launched in May 2015; Powerpack and Megapack are commercial energy products, which were launched in 2017 and 2019 respectively. The difference between the two is that the Megapack has a larger capacity. Megapack can store up to 3MWh per unit.

In the first quarter of this year, thanks to the strong drive of the energy storage product Powerwall, Tesla's installed capacity of energy storage products in the first quarter increased by 90% year-on-year to 846 MWh (megawatt hours).

It is reported that the growth of Tesla's energy storage business is still limited by supply chain challenges as market demand continues to exceed production capacity. On July 20 last year, Tesla's US official website officially launched the Megapack industrial-grade battery energy storage system, priced from US$1 million, and only sold to enterprises, but it is still selling well. During the second-quarter earnings call that year, Musk revealed that Megapack's production capacity by the end of 2022 has been fully sold.

At present, Tesla is increasing the production capacity of the factory dedicated to the production of Megapack products to meet the growing market demand. Since the beginning of this year, Tesla has carried out the construction of several large-scale Megapack energy storage projects.

On April 19, according to foreign media reports, Tesla recently announced the latest giant Megapack energy storage project "Townsite Solar and Storage Facility", which has a capacity of 360MWh and can supply power to 60,000 households. The project, located in Boulder, Nevada, is one of Tesla's largest Megapack projects.
